Franklin Templeton launches dedicated crypto investment division after acquisition

5 min read

Franklin Templeton has completed its acquisition of cryptocurrency investment manager 250 Digital and established Franklin Crypto, a dedicated digital asset investment division, as traditional asset managers continue to expand their institutional cryptocurrency offerings.

The acquisition adds the 250 Digital investment team, led by Christopher Perkins and Seth Ginns, and its actively managed liquid cryptocurrency strategies previously run by CoinFund. Franklin Templeton will also invest in the strategies as part of the agreement.

The closing of this transaction reflects Franklin Templeton’s long-term commitment to building infrastructure across the digital asset landscape, and its conviction in the technologies it believes will define the next generation of institutional investing.

Effective with this closing, Franklin Templeton formally established Franklin Crypto, its dedicated active digital asset management division. Perkins will serve as head of Franklin Crypto with Ginns as chief investment officer, alongside Franklin Templeton Digital Assets investment veteran Tony Pecore. Franklin Crypto will report to Sandy Kaul, head of innovation at Franklin Templeton.

Franklin Crypto will offer institutional investors actively managed cryptocurrency strategies, integrating the investment capabilities of the former 250 Digital team with Franklin Templeton’s global distribution.

The new division builds upon an existing set of digital asset capabilities within Franklin Templeton, including a fully dedicated digital asset unit for fundamental research, active portfolio construction, and institutional risk oversight.
