Northern Trust expands global impact through philanthropy and volunteerism

5 min read

Northern Trust is strengthening communities around the world through expanded philanthropic investment and a powerful culture of global volunteerism that mobilises employees, partners and nonprofits to address critical needs across food security, housing, education and healthcare.

In 2025, Northern Trust contributed $16 million in charitable giving globally, while employees dedicated a record 121,000 hours in support of more than 2,000 nonprofit organisations worldwide. Northern Trust’s community impact spans four critical focus areas—food security, affordable housing, quality education and accessible healthcare—with results that include over 11 million meals provided, nearly 670,000 safe shelter nights funded, over 27,000 students supported and over 218,000 individuals receiving healthcare services. Additional detail on Northern Trust’s charitable partners and outcomes is available in the firm’s 2025 Philanthropic Impact Report, released today.

The company’s philanthropic efforts address critical needs through longstanding partnerships and hands-on employee engagement. Last year, the firm supported organisations such as Food Rescue US in the United States, Whitechapel Mission in the United Kingdom and Our Big Kitchen in Australia, while also advancing food rescue efforts in the Philippines. Northern Trust expanded access to safe and stable housing through initiatives ranging from emergency sleeping pods in Guernsey to affordable homebuilding with Habitat for Humanity in the United States, and invested in education and healthcare—from preparing students for higher learning with College Possible to helping to fund mobile medical clinics in Chicago and lifesaving air ambulance services in Texas.

“For more than 136 years, Northern Trust has worked alongside our charitable partners and employees to strengthen the communities where we live and work. Through the dedication of our people and the expertise of our nonprofit partners around the world, we create lasting social impact that improves lives and builds long-term value for all our stakeholders,” said Shana Hayes, chief social impact officer at Northern Trust.
